Santander pays tribute to one of the best Spanish sculptors

In a moving ceremony organized by the city of Santander on the terrace of Camel Beach, the iconic sculpture “Neptune as a Child” and a commemorative plaque honoring the piece and its creator, the sculptor Ramón Muriedas, were unveiled.

At the tribute, presided over by the Mayor of Santander, Ms. Gema Igual, and the Councilor for Culture, Ms. Miriam Díaz Herrera, the artist’s family, led by Ramón de Muriedas Senarega, celebrated the life and legacy of Ramón Muriedas, whose connection to Santander began in his childhood.

Ramón de Muriedas Mazorra (1938-2014), born in Villacarriedo, moved with his family to Santander at a young age. It was there that he began winning sandcastle competitions on the Sardinero beaches.

The event was closed by the mayor, Gema Igual, who stated that “Ramón Muriedas and his Neptune Child sculpture are forever linked to Camel Beach.”

The family presented the city of Santander with preparatory sketches for “Neptune Child.” Finally, the “Amigos del Mar” choir sang “Santander la Marinera.” Afterwards, family and friends were offered wine at the Royal Stables of the Magdalena Palace.
